“This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants – not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all. As it is written: I have made you the father of many nations – in the presence of the God in whom he believed, the one who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist. He believed, hoping against hope, so that he became the father of many nations according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body to be already dead(since he was about a hundred years old) and also the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver in unbelief at God’s promise but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to do. Therefore, it was credited to him for righteousness. Now it was credited to him, was not written for Abraham alone, but also for us. It will be credited to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.” Romans 4:16-24

I am mainly focusing on this passage because there’s a lot in here that I want to get into.

The first point I’ll make is about when God called Abraham to be the father of many nations. As in, Abraham’s circumstance when God called him. Actually before he was called by God his name was Abram, God changed it to Abraham because in Hebrew Ab means ‘father’ and raham means ‘many.’ God shows up and tells Abram: “No longer shall your name be called Abram , but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.” (Gen 17:5) Notice how God said “I have made you,” he didn’t say I will make you. It was already done, EVEN THOUGH nothing in the physical has changed. He called him before Abraham had any physical evidence that the promise was true. At this point in Abraham’s life, his wife and him weren’t able to have any children and then God says that to him? He wasn’t a father yet and he was already super old and that was the promise God made to him? But faith is above your sense knowledge. You cannot see or feel the things you have faith for… or else you wouldn’t need faith to believe in them. You have to have faith before the physical manifestation. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. For example, healing. God SAID by Jesus’ wounds you have been healed(1 Peter 2:24). Notice, past tense! Which brings me to the part of the scripture that says the one who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist.” I love that, that’s who God is. He knows your pain, he knows the battle in your mind, he knows every heartbreak, he knows everything you’ve been through and are going through, but still he called you healed. He calls you healed so you don’t have to wonder if it is his will for you to be healed. It is always his will for you to be healed. Completely healed in every way! Don’t settle for less than that. Just like salvation is for everyone, healing is for everyone. You just have to accept these things by faith. (ok that was just a healing side note – you’re welcome)

God can’t work in your life if you don’t have faith in his ability. But it’s not like you need to build up this big giant faith before you can come to God with anything, Jesus said to his disciples in Matthew 17:20: “… For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” A mustard seed is so small!! And if you’re like ‘uh I don’t even know how to get a mustard seed of faith.’ I have another scripture for youuu. Romans 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The word of God y’all! The Bible! The word is so beautiful and interesting and on top of that it literally has everything we need to know to get through this life. AND when you read it, your faith grows! And back to Matthew 17:20, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed NOTHING will be impossible for you.

Faith is how God works, faith is how you please God, faith is how you obtain God’s promises, faith is how you become healed, saved, delivered, literally everything takes faith in God’s kingdom.

So God called him. But Abraham had to be the one to believe God. Think about it, Abraham could’ve been like “ok God you haven’t even given us any children,” “I can’t imagine how you’re going to change our situation,” “how am I going to have all these decendants?” He could’ve said soooo many things. But no the bible says: ” He did not waver in unbelief at God’s promise but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to do. Therefore, it was credited to him for righteousness.”  Abraham believed what God said, just because he was God and no other reason. God didn’t have to prove he was worthy to be trusted. Abraham didn’t have The Bible, but simply the words that God spoke to him. And because he had faith and believed God, he became righteous! Because of Abraham’s faith he had right standing with God and this was while he was still under the law. This is why Abraham is our father of faith! Every single one of us who have faith in Jesus have been credited righteousness because of that faith. But Abraham started that! Dang foreshadowing. All the believers that have existed and that will ever exist are God’s promise to Abraham fulfilled, we are his descendants. Genesis 15:5 -“…‘Look toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.’ and He said to him, ‘ So shall your descendants be.” He blessed him, just like he promised and God is still the same today.
